His Royal Highness Prince Saud bin Nayef bin Abdulaziz, Governor of the Eastern Province, received officials and staff of the Eastern Province branch of the Ministry of Transport and Logistics Services at the Emirate’s headquarters, in the presence of His Royal Highness Prince Saud bin Bandar bin Abdulaziz, Deputy Governor of the Eastern Province. The delegation presented an overview of the key projects completed across the region.
The Governor highlighted the support and attention given by the Saudi leadership to the transport and logistics sector, which has contributed to the delivery of major projects that have improved infrastructure efficiency and enhanced the competitiveness of the regions. He commended the Ministry of Transport and Logistics Services for implementing numerous road network projects in the Eastern Province in accordance with engineering standards and traffic safety requirements, contributing to comprehensive development. He also noted the strategic importance of the region’s vital roads and the Ministry’s continued efforts to maintain them at high standards of efficiency.
The Director General of the Ministry of Transport and Logistics Services branch in the Eastern Province, Eng. Ahmed Al-Yami, explained that the six projects recently inaugurated by the Governor included a package of vital projects for the region’s road network, with a total cost of SAR 406 million. These projects were designed to enhance connectivity, support the energy and industrial sectors, and improve road safety and quality of life for road users.
He added that the Ministry’s current and future operational plans focus on ensuring asset sustainability and spending efficiency through asset management and the current project portfolio. The branch is currently overseeing a package of construction and preventive maintenance projects exceeding SAR 1.7 billion to develop key roads across the region. Work is also nearing completion on the regional link road connecting Jubail with the border crossings in the southern part of the region.
He noted that the 2026 targets include a package of projects exceeding SAR 600 million to develop several roads, including the Qatif–Safwa Road and the completion of the dualization of the Ar-Rararah–As-Sarar–Nairyah Road. The plans also include completing repairs covering more than 700 lane-kilometers as part of preventive maintenance projects for major roads, including the Riyadh–Dammam Expressway and the Nairyah–Hafar Al Batin Road.
He further explained that maintenance contracts have been shifted from the traditional quantity-based approach to performance-based contracts, ensuring contractors meet comprehensive quality standards through defined and regularly measured performance indicators that help maintain road network safety. Future plans also include upgrading and expanding the Dammam–Riyadh Expressway to four lanes, alongside greater use of roller-compacted concrete on truck lanes to ensure greater durability under heavy loads and extend the road’s service life.
Eng. Al-Yami expressed his appreciation to the Governor and Deputy Governor of the Eastern Province for their continued support of the Ministry’s branch in the region, noting that their support has contributed significantly to its continued achievements.
